World Hepatitis Day – 28th July: Hepatitis Awareness by Premier Hospital

Hepatitis is a global disease which accounts for 1.34 million deaths every year. This disease often gets transmitted from an infected mother to a newly born baby. Keeping this in view, the World Health Organization (WHO) started celebrating World Hepatitis Day every year on the 28th of July, to eliminate viral hepatitis.
Why Celebrate World Hepatitis Day?
Around 95% of patients who have hepatitis don’t know about their infection. This is due to lack of awareness and access to testing services. World Hepatitis Day is observed to bring awareness about hepatitis as well as to release hepatitis guidelines for better health conditions across the globe.
July 28 was chosen in honour of Dr Baruch Samuel Blumberg Nobel scientist birthday, who discovered the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed diagnostic tests and vaccines for the virus and implemented vaccination globally.
