What is Oral and Maxillofacial surgery?

Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is a speciality unit which leads in the diagnosis and treatment in a wide range of disorders which are known to affect facial complex and skeleton, which are strongly related to jaws and oral cavity. Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is also used in treating diseases or disorders of the face and neck. The treatments include a range of standard oral surgical problems (e.g. impacted teeth, dental implants), jaw and congenital facial disproportion, facial trauma, oral cancer, salivary gland disease, temporomandibular joint disorders, and various benign pathologies (e.g. cysts and tumours of the jaws).

Rest is important following oral surgery and it is recommended for at least two days following the procedure. It is not recommended to engage in physical activity for two to three days after your surgery. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within 48 hours after surgery
Physical activity, including sports and exercise should only be performed with the use of a custom mouth splint during the first 2-4 months. Initial healing can be observed in the jaw over the course of 6 to 8 weeks, but you should allow your body to recover at a safe pace, allowing up to 4 months.
